A quick run through about pianos and keyboards
When most of us think about a piano, we think of a concert pianist playing a grand piano, but there are two or three types of piano, here we will discuss them, from the grand piano, to the upright piano to the digital keyboard.
First item on the list is the grand piano itself. The longer strings and huge size of the grand piano help it to achieve its sound as well as reducing the low-end frequencies and harmonics. A smaller piano, like a baby grand, and the boudoir grand piano will use thicker strings than the concert grand to keep the tension within the strings, allowing for clarity in the sound. String tension would be lowered if a smaller piano used the concert grands piano strings, making the sound muddy and possibly unplayable. The sizes of the grand piano range from 2-3 meteres for a concert piano, to 1-2 meteres for a boudoir grand piano to the baby grand piano, which is just slightly smaller than the boudoir.
An ‘upright’ piano is what most people mean when they say they own a piano. With its frame and strings horizontally housed inside the piano, the upright piano is slightly smaller than a grand piano, but can still be 45 inches or taller.
Mistaken all too often as another keyboard is the electric piano, which as a piano has the foot pedals which a piano has to control frequencies and pitch which the keyboard doesnt. But they honestly dont sound as good as an acoustic piano, even with the ‘wonders of modern technology’.
And as for those digital keyboards…..
Compared to the piano, the keyboard is smaller, cheaper and easier to carry around, so will probably be the closest thing most of us will ever have to owning a piano. Digital technology has allowed the keyboard to carry hundreds of different sound in it, from a church organ, to piano to steel drum, which gives it some versitility and humour factor that the piano lacks.
